It was an awards dinner that was to be both elegant and Hawaiian in feel. Current Affairs transformed an outdoor multi-level area into a cohesive space that was more than appropriate for the awards ceremony and dinner. More Images....
Volcano Fantasy
This hot event erupted with color, fire knife entertainment and the glow of a replica volcano. The evening began with a Kahuna (Hawaiian elder) weaving stories of old Hawaii about Pele, the Goddess of Fire and Matron of Volcanoes. Guests meandered through an ancient volcano bed, now a beautiful valley of lush tropical flora and fauna, to a clear roofed canopy set aside a majestic mountain. Once there, the Kahuna offered a chant to the Gods, ensuring a magical 'Fantasy' come true! The Menu and More Images.... Pictures by Chaz ACES Photography
Barefoot on the Beach
Imagine elegant dining with your toes in the sand, literally. For this event, we arranged multiple 10' by 10' cabana-style tents, beautifully curtained in white and edged with an earth-toned stripe, on the beach. Each cabana featured traditional side draped fabric walls tied to each of its upright poles, with a backlit stretched white fabric ceiling, creating an internal glow. Other elements included ambient lighting, soothing entertainment and elegantly dressed tables. More Images....
Reach for the Beach
Australia Bonland Dairies retained Current Affairs to produce two aloha-themed events. For inspiration, the event team reached for the beach. Tie-dyed linens, Spandex chair covers and a grass shack serving station created a crisp and contemporary interpretation of a beach party. A wall of surfboards and tropical plants provided a visual divider between the color-drenched beach party, and a formal wedding that took place in a nearby ballroom. More Images.... Zen Charged with orchestrating a Zen-themed event at a beachfront Kauai restaurant for a medical convention, Current Affairs cleared the eatery of its entire wicker furniture, recasting the property's aura with simple, stylish, clean-line designs of Asia. Decor was accented with black and gold color tones, elegant floral arrangements and Japanese-style lanterns. Current Affairs also provided uniforms as well as insight and direction for the restaurant's staff to service the event as a catered group function rather than the usual, individual table service. The Art of Music
Current Affairs took music to a new art form with this special event for the Honolulu Symphony at Washington Place, formerly the Governor's residence. Different musicians, including a taiko drummer, were featured on stages throughout the terrace. In a special performance, symphony conductor Sam Wong engaged the musicians in an instrumental call-and-response. Dinner service was synchronized to music - a harpist, baroque trio and brass musicians - marking the dramatic arrival of each course. The Menu and More Images.... Pictures by Chaz ACES Photography
Prince Hoku's Supper Club
![]() Building on Hawaii's rich royal heritage and military presence, Current Affairs created Prince Hoku's, a supper club for the affluent and the war torn and weary. Influenced by the grace and charm of King Kalakaua, the supper club featured a gracious yet elegant dining room. Backlit stylized shadow printed linen screens cast a light tropical flair as did 6' black and gold iron mesh sculptures filled with white and gilded tropical flowers and laced with bejeweling lights. Adding a sophisticated, rich quality, the tables were dressed in black and gold satin striped linen and decorated with centerpieces of gold turned lamps with white frosted shades set amid flowers. Completing the elegant look, the chairs were covered with black stretch fabric with a tightly pleated gold band.
Blue Hawaii
Dreams certainly do come true in Blue Hawaii, and this is one Hukilau that would even put a smile on the king of rock and roll himself! Vintage decor accents, reminiscent of days gone by, greeted Guests who were encouraged to arrive in popular Hawaiian clothing from the 60's era. After being offered an array of mai tais and, of course, Blue Hawaii drinks by charming beach boys and girls, Guests made their way past the thatched-hut bars where they were treated to colorfully decorated buffets with bamboo skirting, fishnets, seashells, surfboards and of course lush Hawaiian tropical florals (a must for all luaus) amid scrumptious and delectable goodies. Two large Hawaiian Tiki statues presided over the evening's festivities as Elvis and his band entertained with tunes from the 50's and 60's, and graceful Hula Dancers in Hollywood cellophane skirts swayed their hips to the beat! Awesome Powers
What else could be said about this 'Awesome Powers' event, but 'Groovy Baby'! The 'Swinger's Lounge' featured velvet sofas and chairs, faux lamps with fringe, Awesome Powers dressed in his velvet suit, and the 'Supremettes' lip-syncing to 'Baby Love,' Stop in the Name of Love' and other Motown songs. Awesome's 'Dinner Pad' featured strobe lights, illuminated bars in a myriad of color fronts silhouetting graphic images of the Go-Go 70's, tables and chairs dressed in bright colored vinyl, S-shaped columns projecting images of Awesome Powers characters, dancing Go Go girls in vinyl mini dresses and 14' upside down ice cream cones sheathed in shocking flashing psychedelic polka dots. The Red Party
Snow White wanders into the red light district and dances in a Go Go cage. While Walt Disney may have been disappointed, for the 500 partygoers of the Pacific Telecommunications Conference, it was an evening of red-hot delight. Our creative team transformed a hip-hop nightclub, swathing it in a bath of red light and decor that included red stalagmites piercing down from the ceiling. Hawaii's Iona Dance Troupe was retained for the party's all-star cast: Snow White, the Evil Queen and the Devil himself. But, by the end of the night, the villains, the heroes and the Guests were all on the dance floor, along with a 10-foot tall ceremonial Chinese red lion, dancing the night away. Hot! Hot! Hot!
![]() Things really heated up at this event, which featured sizzling music, peppery dancers and explosive surprises. Fun was in the air at Club Hot Hot Hot. A guitarist and funky horn player really got in the mood...a mime, magician and juggler entertained and the enticing sounds of Calypso drew Guests to the limbo dance. All at once, stage candles ignited simultaneously, leading Guests to a climactic cheer heightened by the band hitting a feverish pitch. Gorgeous Latino dancers danced up a frenzy and party revelers in full costume broke onto the dance floor doing a vibrant Lambada as they tossed beads, glow necklaces, castanets & maracas to club revelers. A sassy salsa takes over and the next thing you know, you're dancing in the samba line and making new friends all the while! More Images....
The Orange Lounge
Current Affairs specializes in taking a concept and painting it red, well orange in this case, meaning pushing the envelope to create larger-than-life productions. And that's just what we did for a new pharmaceutical product that tasted like orange. For the 'Orange Lounge' event at Ala Moana Hotel, orange drenched the room wall to wall and floor to ceiling. With no detail left unattended, the carpet, the faux fur lamps and even the cocktails were orange. Black lounge couches and techno jazz accented the event. More Images....
Surf's Up! This event for a group of 600 people took place at Anaeho'omalu Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. Low- and high-top tables were placed right onto the sand amid tall, graceful palm trees. Neon palm trees and hanging lanterns helped to create energy while surfboard-shaped tables and surfer centerpieces added to the beachin' fun. This fun drenched beach party concept can be adapted for groups of all sizes and works at a myriad of venues on all islands. More Images....
Lu'au
At what is now called the Kahala Resort and Hotel, this upscale Luau began on one side of the property where Guests were then 'Pipered' over to an area outside the oceanside Magnum P.I. Bar setting. The King's Guard, standing guard over the Cocktail reception, initiated the movement of the Guests over to dinner. Along the way, a Keiki hula halau greeted and guided the Guests to the dinner area. As it was a stormy night, Current Affairs used the tent's infrastructure to rig a down light focused on each of the centerpieces and Buffet station. We dressed up and positioned the hotel's outrigger canoe so it could be used as the dessert station for an added tie-in to the concept. More Images....
Abdul's Oasis
At the city gates, guards stood at attention to keep the serfs back. It was by the canopies of the sacred pools that the Great Ones stopped for a moment to sample the delicacies of the marketplace. After a brief while, the four guards continued on with the litter, carrying the Great Ones to the Palace's elegant dining room. The 'Palace' (an oversized gala marquee pitched on the lawn of a hotel) was outfitted with the honored ones in mind, creating a setting fit for those deserving of the "Royal Treatment." Staff, in colorful costumes with hats or turbans, pampered the Guests at their tables, before the night was through, the guards were ordered to throw everyone into the Dungeon Disco, it was a fiery hot desert night! Formal Dinner Decor In Honolulu for the ASAE convention, Hyatt senior executives & their Clients gathered at Washington Place, the former Governor's residence, for an evening of celebration. Retained specifically for its mastery at tablescape artistry, Current Affairs was given just one guideline: impeccable table settings to reflect a zen feeling. We combined bamboo napkin ring holders, tropical greens with a white orchid and river rocks, custom-made wrought iron tea candle holders, black and white chinaware with a shadow box pattern and a dramatic black tablecloth flecked with gold as the backdrop. Lu'auA Vodafone-inspired luau at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Coconut Grove. Under a clear tent,
we placed luau-style long tables, draped in red tablecloths with white
and red lei table runners and hurricane candle lanterns. Guests were
seated on the ground on red and white floral cushions set upon lauhala
mats. Little grass huts placed around the grounds housed the red-draped
food stations. And, as with the first night, Guests were greeted with
fiery red cocktails and white orchid lei to set the tone for the rest
of the night. A stage for entertainment was lined with bamboo and red
anthuriums, with the Vodafone logo on a large screen serving as its
backdrop. Click to view More Images....
